Spelling Games And Visual Activities

Spelling is a learning area that is often boring for students. During this remote learning period it is worth considering how to mix it up a bit. Games and art projects are a good way of making learning how to spell fun. Even simple spelling game like hangman can be a fun way of targeting words that you child commonly misspells.

On websites like pin-interest, you can find countless art projects that focus on spelling. One art project which drew my eye was an idea called ‘A little low tech’ in this activity children write different words in small text in specific colours and use these words to make a picture. For example, they may write sky in blue, stem in dark green, leaves in dark green, stem in light green, dirt in dark brown, and pot in orange. They then use these words as visual elements to create a picture. (for example, drawing the outline of a pot and colouring it in by writing the word pot over again in brown pencil).

If you were trying to help you child prepare for an upcoming spelling quiz or if spelling was an area that needed attention than such activities are potentially a good way of focusing on these areas. Remote learning is hard. But flexibly thinking about how you can make learning fun can help you and you children get through it!
