Visual Thinking Routines

It can be hard to support youth to develop their higher order thinking skills. Harvard University has collated a lot of visual thinking routines which are useful resources. One of these routines is called the ‘See Think, Wonder’ routine (Harvard University, 2016). It can support youth examine visual media at a deeper level.
Often when asked what they think about visual media youth will give one word answers. If your children are responding in this way you can use this routine to ask three follow up questions. Namely, what do you see, what do you you think is happening in the visual medium, and what do you wonder? These questions can support youth to elaborate upon their thinking which can facilitate longer conversations. I hope this post will support your children to more thoroughly engage with visual media on a deeper level.
