We are back in lockdown. Remote learning is hard and it is not the same as being at school. However, there are many informal learning opportunities in the home which can supplement your children’s education and keep them engaged. Today, we will discuss three examples of possible fun learning opportunities that you can do in the home.
Firstly, you could get your children to use ‘Minecraft: Educational edition’ to ‘visually display’ their knowledge of a topic. For example, they could create a zoo, or an Olympic stadium/figures, a hospital etc to respectively convey their knowledge of animals, sports( specifically, the Olympics), medicine etc. Here, encouraging them and asking questions are great ways to support them to research and to extend their knowledge.
Secondly, there is a lot of artistic work that you can do around picture books and reading. If your children is reading a book that they especially like (it could be anything from a picture to a novel). Once they finish reading it, they could extend the story in the form of a comic book, or a picture book, etc. This could help them to continue develop their critical thinking skills.
Thirdly, they can use an iPad to make movies. Creating short educational films is a great way for students to show their knowledge about a topic. Additionally, ‘made believe’ films is a great way for kids to develop their creativity. While, it is important to make sure that they do not become to distracted, there are still many educational opportunities inherent in creating movies.
Lockdown is hard. But there are countless educational experiences in the home which can be used to supplement your children reading. Take one day at a time and never stop looking for opportunities to make learning engaging and fun.
